The Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC), based in Monterey, California, serves as a crucial component of the US Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command. It provides worldwide meteorological and oceanographic data and analysis, including Global and Regional Weather/Ocean Wave Prediction Charts (WXMAP, WW3) and tropical cyclone imagery, for the United States Navy and its strategic allies. Comprising military and civilian specialists, FNMOC's efforts support virtually every US Navy combat platform and weapons system, utilizing advanced models like the Navy Global Environmental Model (NAVGEM) and the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM).
Tracing its roots to the Navy Numerical Weather Problems (NANWEP) group established in 1958, the center moved to Monterey in 1974 and officially adopted the FNMOC title in 1993. Today, FNMOC stands as one of the Department of Defense's primary central production sites, generating critical, computer-generated operational meteorological and oceanographic forecast products globally.
