Alok Vaid-Menon: Gender-Nonconforming Artist and Activist

Alok Vaid-Menon, also known as ALOK, is an American writer, performance artist, and media personality. They are gender non-conforming and transfeminine, using singular they third-person pronouns. Alok's work focuses on issues facing trans and gender-nonconforming individuals, calling for liberation from societal constraints. They advocate for bodily diversity, gender neutrality, and self-determination, having presented their creative work in over 40 countries.

Growing up as a child of Indian immigrants in Texas, Alok faced bullying for their race and gender. They found solace in art, using it to express their identity on their own terms. After graduating from Stanford University with degrees in feminist, gender, and sexuality studies, sociology, and comparative studies in race and ethnicity, Alok went on to perform with DarkMatter, an art and activist collaborative. In 2019, they returned to their hometown to host a Pride celebration in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots.

Alok's performance style is known for its stream of consciousness, humor, and emotional range. They challenge traditional categories and emphasize the importance of world-building and vulnerability on stage. Their work often revolves around themes of transmisogyny, representation, and the challenges faced by TGNC individuals. In their book "Femme in Public," Alok explores the harassment and violence experienced by transfeminine people. They also create spaces for connection and healing, challenging the idea of loneliness and advocating for emotional justice.

Beyond performance, Alok has designed gender-neutral fashion collections and modeled for various brands. Their designs celebrate skirts and dresses as gender-neutral garments and aim to degender the fashion industry. They have been recognized for their work with awards and media recognition, including being named one of Vogue's "9 Trans + Gender Non-Conforming Writers You Should Know" and one of OUT Magazine's 100 Influential LGBTQ+ People of 2019.
